FIFE TAKE THIRD PLACE IN EAST DIVISION INTER-COUNTY MATCHES
The Fife County Team of Hannah Braidwood, Brogan Clark, Susan Jackson, Jocelyn Mackie, Lorraine Morrow, Gillian Paton and Karin Sharp together with loyal supporters and caddies Susie Robertson, Irene Morrison, Evelyn Hamilton, Joan Peden, Christine Steedman, Margaret Steele, Shona Hutchison and Joan Tulloch enjoyed three lovely days this week on the superb links of Dunbar in the East Division Jamboree coming third behind winners Midlothian and second-place Stirling and Clackmannanshire and just escaping the wooden spoon with an emphatic win over East Lothian on the last day.
The golf course could not have been better and whilst the weather was not the heat wave promised, it was perfect for golf with the ever-changing breeze posing different questions of the players each round.
Fife faced their toughest challenge on the first day against Midlothian and, although they made a promising start moving ahead in the foursomes in the early parts of the rounds, they could not maintain the pressure against the strong opposition and were defeated at the end of the day despite a great 4&2 win by new Champion, Gillian Paton, over Scottish Internationalist and past Scottish Champion Gabrielle MacDonald.
The foursomes were also Fife’s downfall on day two against Stirling and Clackmannan and, although they took the afternoon singles, it was not enough to avoid a second defeat. Star of the singles was Hannah Braidwood who was making her debut for Fife and who played faultlessly in winning her match.
Everything came good for Fife on the third day with wins in both the foursomes and singles and special mention must be made again of Gillian Paton who led the team with an 8&7 win and Hannah Braidwood who emphasised her talent for match play with a gritty 3&1 win over a much more experienced opponent.
The spirit in the Fife team was tremendous and everyone gave their all. With a little more luck at the right time, the results could have been different but the team is now looking forward to next year when the matches will be held at Ladybank on 1st to 3d July.
